Under the general oversight of Scott Farrell (Cathedral Director of Music), the choir is conducted by the Director of the Voluntary Choir, currently Douglas Henn-Macrae.

Douglas was previously Senior Lay Clerk in the Cathedral Choir, which he first joined as a Supernumerary Lay Clerk in 1970 after coming down from Bristol University with an honours degree in music. He has also spent 20 years as a parish organist/choirmaster in the area, including 17 years at St Faith’s Maidstone. Douglas is currently studying for an MMus degree at Canterbury Christ Church University, and hopes to continue studying to MPhil/PhD level with a thesis on the music of Dr Robert Ashfield (Cathedral Organist 1955-77).

The Voluntary Choir is normally accompanied by either the Cathedral Organist, Roger Sayer; the Sub-Organist, Sam Rathbone; the Director of Music, Scott Farrell or the Organ Scholar.
